Five Takeaways From Washingtons Week 1 Loss To Tampa Bay

Five Takeaways from Washington's Week 1 Loss to Tampa Bay

Early struggles doom Commanders

The Washington Commanders got off to a slow start against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1, and they were never able to recover. The Commanders offense didn't get a first down until their third drive of the game, and they trailed 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Commanders defense was unable to generate any pressure on Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady, and Brady was able to pick them apart all day long. The Buccaneers scored touchdowns on their first three drives of the game, and they led 28-0 at halftime.

Wentz struggles in first game with Commanders

Carson Wentz had a rough outing in his first game with the Commanders. Wentz completed just 25 of 43 passes for 211 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He was also sacked three times and lost a fumble.

Wentz's performance was particularly disappointing considering that he was facing a Buccaneers defense that was missing several key players. The Buccaneers were without cornerback Carlton Davis, safety Antoine Winfield Jr., and linebacker Lavonte David.

Commanders' running game fails to impress

The Commanders' running game was ineffective against the Buccaneers. Antonio Gibson ran for just 24 yards on 10 carries, and J.D. McKissic ran for just 15 yards on four carries.

The Commanders' offensive line was unable to generate any push for the running backs, and the Buccaneers were able to stuff the run all day long. The Commanders finished the game with just 64 rushing yards.

Defense can't stop the run

The Commanders' defense was unable to stop the Buccaneers' running game. Leonard Fournette ran for 127 yards on 21 carries, and Ronald Jones II ran for 63 yards on 12 carries.

The Commanders' defense was particularly vulnerable to the run in the second half. The Buccaneers ran for 133 yards in the second half, and they were able to control the clock and keep the Commanders' offense off the field.

Special teams mistakes cost Commanders

The Commanders' special teams made several mistakes that cost them the game. Tress Way had a punt blocked in the first half, and Joey Slye missed a field goal in the second half.

These mistakes gave the Buccaneers good field position, and they were able to capitalize on the Commanders' errors. The Buccaneers scored touchdowns after both of the Commanders' special teams mistakes.
