Montreal, June 2024 - Championship leader Max Verstappen has kicked off his Canadian Grand Prix weekend in style as he set the quickest time in opening practice with a 1:13.036, over half a second clear of Carlos Sainz in second.

The Dutchman was in a positive mood after the session, and he hailed the recent contract renewal of teammate Sergio Perez as the best thing for Red Bull.

"I think it's the best thing for the team," Verstappen said. "Checo is a great driver and he's been doing a really good job for us this year. He's been a great teammate and I think he's only going to get better."

Verstappen also assessed Red Bull's chances in Canada, and he believes the team is in a strong position to challenge for the win.

"I think we have a good car here," Verstappen said. "We've been quick all weekend and I think we can be competitive in the race. We'll see what the weather does, but I'm confident that we can have a good result."

Verstappen's teammate Perez was also in a positive mood after the session, and he believes Red Bull is the team to beat in Canada.

"I think we're looking good," Perez said. "The car is feeling good and I'm feeling confident. I think we can fight for the win tomorrow."
